Why is Acton taking on a project like the translation of Abraham Kuyper's 'Common Grace' into english?

The Acton Institute has a strong desire to build on the significant role we are playing in contributing to the intellectual capital in evangelicalism. That is why we are collaborating with Kuyper College in Grand Rapids to produce the first ever English translation of Abraham Kuyper's seminal three-volume Common Grace. That is why Acton also acquired the Grand Rapids-based book imprint Christian's Library Press in June of 2010 and created the NIV Stewardship Study Bible with the Stewardship Council and Zondervan in 2009. We want to be a trusted and leading voice for evangelicals when es to developing the very best intellectual resources. Christian's Library Press will publish the translation, with the first volume scheduled to appear in the fall of 2012.

Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was a Dutch theologian and statesman and his work Common Grace is based on a series of newspaper editorials intended to mon citizens and laypersons with the tools they needed to effectively enter public life. The doctrine mon grace is, as Kuyper puts it, "the root conviction for all Reformed people." It is a fitting source plement the mission of the Acton Institute while simultaneously edifying the life of the believer. For Kuyper College, the translation is instrumental in providing a theological framework for their new business leadership program.

Acton's director of programs Dr. Stephen Grabill will serve as the general editor of the project. Dr. John Bolt, a theology professor at Calvin Theological Seminary, will serve as a theological advisor. Dr. Nelson Kloosterman of Worldview Resources International, and translator of numerous Dutch works, will translate the texts.

This Acton project, especially in Reformed Protestant circles, will also serve as a valuable resource to draw evangelicals back to first principles and assist in the orientation of Protestant social thought. Kuyper declared, "If the believer's God is at work in this world, then in this world the believer's hand must take hold of the plow, and the name of the Lord must be glorified in that activity as well." Expounding and distributing Kuyper's holistic approach to declaring God's dominion over the world, the human person, business, and the church will be a rewarding and fruitful endeavor for Acton.

New Republican Platform Drops Abortion Ban
The new Republican National Convention platform endorsed by Donald Trump is missing the strong pro-life stance evangelicals have come to expect from the GOP. Instead of calling for a concerted national push to curtail abortion, as the official party platform has done for the past 40 years, the new document removes that language and deems the matter best left to...
Jarkesy Rejuvenates Juries
The United States Supreme Court continues to reaffirm and return to the founding principles ingrained within the Constitution. In recent days, that reaffirmation has occurred within the area of administrative law, where the Court’s decisions have invigorated the doctrine of separation of powers and strengthened the liberty protections of the jury trial. In what may be the most far-reaching decision...
After Two Elections, France Is Still Politically Divided. Can Christians Make a Difference?
Like the rest of the country, French evangelicals went to the polls on Sunday for the second round of parliamentary elections in what became a showdown between the far right and the rest of the country. The Nouveau Front Populaire (New Popular Front), a fragile new coalition of leftist parties, formed a Republican front with the centrist parties allied with...
Who Is Running This Place? (Colossians 1:16
BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY:“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. NetChoice and the “Big Tech” Scare
In 2021, conservative lawmakers were concerned about so-called “Big Tech” censorship. Fresh in their minds was Twitter’s and Facebook’s suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story, as well as those platforms’ decision, in the wake of the January 6 Capitol riot, to ban Donald Trump from their services. In Florida and Texas, this concern translated into a pair of statutes...
Prisoners for Liberty
It is the best of times, it is the worst of times to be a man of fighting age in Ukraine. Despite persistent Russian gains into their homeland, despite the gut-wrenching losses amongst their friends and the daily tragedy of civilian bombardment, morale is remarkably high. Ukrainians I’ve worked with generally feel they are on the right side of a...
UK Evangelicals Look Ahead to Potential Changes After Labour Victory
The United Kingdom elected a new prime minister in a landslide win for the Labour Party, a significant shift of political power after 14 years of Conservative-led government. Neither party secured the majority of the countrys evangelical vote, but evangelicals of varying affiliations will be following how the new Labour government addresses areas of concern for the church, including the...
Iranian Christians Question Reformist Credentials of New President
The surprise election in Iran of the sole reformist candidate for president was met with an unsurprising reaction from the United States. Heart surgeon Masoud Pezeshkian tallied 53 percent of the vote for a clear but narrow victory over hard-line former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in an electoral process the State Department labeled not free or fair. It followed the...
A Prayer for When Someone You Love Walks away from Their Faith
A Prayer for When Someone You Love Walks away from Their Faith By Chris Eyte “Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.” - Song of Songs 2:15 I remember the very last session of the year-out discipleship course that I did with a group of wonderful men and women...
