U.S. Southern Borders Overwhelmed By Children
U.S. Southern Borders Overwhelmed By Children
Jan 14, 2026 4:18 PM

It has long been apparent that U.S. borders are far from secure. Border patrol agents are stretched thin, especially along the southern states, dealing with illegal immigrants, human traffickers and smugglers, and the drug cartels. Now, there is a new problem with no easy solution: children teeming into the U.S., many under the age of 12. According to The Washington Times,

The flood of young children pouring across the southwestern border is worse than the administration has previously acknowledged, and efforts to deal with panied minors are overwhelming the Border Patrol, distracting it from going after smugglers and other illegal immigrants, according to an internal draft memo from the agency.

The four-page memo, authored by Deputy Border Patrol Chief Ronald D. Vitiello and dated May 30, contradicts the administration’s argument that the border is secure enough to begin legalizing current illegal aliens already in the U.S.

According to estimates in the memo, about 90,000 children have been apprehended by law enforcement so far in 2014, up from 40,000 in 2013. Of course, these numbers are only the children that were apprehended; there were no estimates for how many panied minors actually crossed the border. The children ing from Mexico and Central America and cite poverty and violence as the reason they are seeking life in the U.S. The journey is exceedingly dangerous, especially for girls, who face sexual assault at a much higher rate than boys.

Breitbart News received leaked photos of processing centers in Texas, showing children “warehoused” in overcrowded conditions.

Breitbart Texas Border Expert and Contributing Editor Sylvia Longmire reviewed the photos.

“Given the deteriorating security and economic conditions in the Central American countries where most of these children and adult immigrants came from, it’s hard to understand how DHS didn’t see ing,” Longmire said. “The trend towards increased cross-border movement towards south Texas and away from Arizona has been apparent; the trend of Central Americans starting to outnumber Mexican crossers has been apparent. Even worse is believing that DHS knew this ing, but didn’t have the resources or ability to cut through bureaucratic red tape to prepare more quickly.

“Now the results of this mismanagement are thousands of individuals living in inhumane conditions for an indeterminate period of time, as well as exhausted and overwhelmed Border Patrol agents and CBP detention facilities,” Longmire continued. “The Obama administration’s band-aid fix has been to ship a good portion of these immigrants — many of whom are weak, emotionally vulnerable, sick, and confused — to other sectors as far as San Diego county in California and release them with no obligation other than to show up for a hearing in 15 days.

Longmire said this situation highlighted the terrible blight of poverty and violence in Mexico and Central America, and was “a humiliating example” of the failure of U.S. border security policies and planning.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which manages the largest re-settlement program (Migration and Refugee Services or MRS) in the world has a program for panied minors. They seek to place children in foster care through the network of Catholic Charities across the country, along with managing advocacy programs that address the unique needs of these children. Often, these children face post-traumatic stress disorder, drug abuse issues, malnutrition, depression and other health issues. It is mon that the children have little or no formal education. The handbook outlining the principles of this program states:

USCCB/MRS policy and program initiatives particularly focus on the protection needs of panied displaced children. We specialize in the intersection between migration and child permanency, international protection, and integration. We build the capacity of agencies nationally and internationally to respond to the emerging needs of refugees, undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, victims of trafficking, and other vulnerable migrating populations.

For more than thirty years, the URM program has assisted children and youth in need of third country resettlement as well as those in mixed migration flows in need of protection. We value the role the program has played in the lives of thousands of children and youth.

At this point, officials say they have no way to stop the flow of panied children into the U.S. other than reaching out to the countries of origin for these children. Obviously, this isn’t working for anyone, least of all the children.

Freedom Of Speech Doesn’t Come With Clauses
Thankfully, a bunch of attorneys did not write the founding documents of our nation. Otherwise, we’d be stuck with a Bill of Rights about 700 pages long, and a “we’ll have to pass it to find out what’s in there” attitude. Instead, we have simple things, like Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably...
It’s Come To This: Having Good Parents Is An ‘Unfair Advantage’
“One way philosophers might think about solving the social justice problem would be by simply abolishing the family. If the family is this source of unfairness in society then it looks plausible to think that if we abolished the family there would be a more level playing field.” “Why are families a good thing exactly?” “We should accept that lots of stuff that goes on in healthy families—and that our theory defends—will confer unfair advantage.” One of my co-workers thought...
China Attempts to End Its War on Baby Girls
If you were asked to name the technologies whose proliferation inadvertently threatens the human race, what would you include? Landmines? Assault rifles? Nuclear warheads? Add this one to your list: the sonogram machine. The widespread use of sonogram technology—coupled with liberal abortion laws—has made it easier than ever for women to identify the sex of their child so that those without a Y chromosome can be killed before they’re even born. The effects of this war on baby girls can...
Acton University 2015: Plenary Speaker Joel Salatin
Don’t let the dirty boots and the beat-up cowboy hat fool you: Joel Salatin is not your average farmer. While he is a farmer (he owns and operates Polyface Farm), he has a lot to say about how we produce, distribute and eat food in our nation, and how practices in the West negatively impact the developing world. What each of these delegates said, each session I went to, was, “You Americans butt out. We don’t need your foreign aid....
Return to Duty: Three Tips from John Witherspoon on ‘Hearkening the Rod’
In the spring of 1776, John Witherspoon preached his first sermon on political matters, about a month before he was elected to the Continental Congress. The sermon, “The Dominion of Providence Over the Passions of Men,”is a fascinating exploration of how God can work through human crises, and how even the “wrath of man” can lead us to glorify God in unexpected ways. Surrounded by the conflict of the Revolution, Witherspoon calls on his countrymen to “return to duty,” neither...
Summit Calls for a Police Force to Defend Persecuted Christians
It’s time to stop talking about persecution of Christians in the Middle East and time to do something to stop the violence. That was the message of a recent conference on Christians in the Middle East held in Bari, Italy, and organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio, a Catholic lay movement. Marco Impagliazzo, the president of Sant’Egidio, floated a different idea: the creation of an international police force capable of intervening in emergency situations when minority groups such as Christians...
Do ‘Hobby Lobby’ Critics Side with Chinese Authorities Against Religious Freedom?
Many Muslims believe the use of tobacco products is forbidden (haram) because “tobacco is unwholesome, and God says in the Qur’an that the Prophet, peace be upon him, ‘enjoins upon them that which is good and pure, and forbids them that which is unwholesome’.” Similarly, the Quran prohibits the use of intoxicants, such as alcohol, and considers such use to be sinful. For these reasons, many Muslim shopkeepers consider it against their religious beliefs to sell alcohol and cigarettes. The...
Unemployment as Economic-Spiritual Indicator — April 2015 Report
Series Note: Jobs are one of the most important aspects of a morally functioning economy. They help us serve the needs of our neighbors and lead to human flourishing both for the individual and munities. Conversely, not having a job can adversely affect spiritual and psychological well-being of individuals and families. Because unemployment is a spiritual problem, Christians in America need to understand and be aware of the monthly data on employment. Each month highlight the latest numbers we need...
Michigan Voters Reject $2 Billion Bipartisan Flim Flam

What is Liberal Morality?
“Three recent events have made me reflect on a certain theme that should be of interest to religious-minded advocates of the free society,” says Kishore Jayabalan in this week’s Acton Commentary. The three events were: 1) an interview I gave to an Italian online publication in response to a French professor who claims that capitalism is the root cause of gender theory and other cultural and social revolutions associated with liberalism; 2) a talk given by a German professor on...
