Overcome Evil with Good This Halloween
Overcome Evil with Good This Halloween
Oct 18, 2024 3:25 PM

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 (NIV)

As October unfolds, we find ourselves surrounded by the sights and sounds of Halloween. From spooky decorations to entertainment with horror themes, Halloween is a season when we can become more aware of the reality of evil in our fallen world. Evil can seem overwhelming – whether it’s hatred, injustice, physical violence, or spiritual attacks. However, God calls us to respond to this awareness not with fear, but with faith in him to help us fight evil with the power of good.

Evil is real, but so is God’s goodness – andGod’s good power is much stronger than any evil we face. As God’s children in relationships with Jesus, we have the power to overcome evil. We can always fight back against evil and win. Our good God helps usshine the light of good into the darkness of evil around us. In the face of evil, God’s goodness shines as a beacon of hope. God’s love is unconditional, God’s power is limitless, and God’s grace is abundant. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to overcome evil and live a life of righteousness. Throughout history, we have seen countless examples of God’s goodness triumphing over evil.

Jesus is the ultimate example of overcoming evil with good. He confronted evil with love, forgiveness, andthe power of the Holy Spirit. His work to save us from sin was the ultimate victory over evil, demonstrating God’s complete triumph over darkness. By following Jesus' example, we can learn to overcome evil in our own lives.

There are many ways we can overcome evil with good. We can fill our minds with the truth of God’s Word by reading the Bible, memorizing verses, and applying its wisdom to the decisions we make. We can pray for God’s protection over our lives and ask God for discernment to recognize how to best resist evil in our lives. We can be intentional about choosing words of hope, encouragement, and truth in our conversations with people and our interactions on social media. We can serve others through intentional acts of kindness that spread God’s light in this dark world. We can rely on God’s strength to help us forgive the people who have hurt us, showing them grace because God has shown us grace.

Goodness is not just the absence of evil; it’s an active force that reflects the character of God. When we choose to overcome evil with good, we aren’t just avoiding sin; we’re actively participating in the work of God’s kingdom. We’re reflecting the holy heart of our Savior, who went about doing good and proclaiming the Kingdom of God in ways that made powerful positive change happen. Jesus confronted evil head-on – not with violence or hatred, but with love, sacrifice, and truth. Jesus calls us to follow his example in our own lives. We shouldn’t allow evil to overcome us. Instead, we should take action every day to do whatever God leads us to do with his power flowing through our lives, and that will help us overcome evil with good.

During the Halloween season – and every day of the year – let’s remember that God has given us the power to overcome evil with good. Let’s embrace that calling with confidence, knowing that the light of God’s love shines brightly in the darkness.

  Let’s pray:

Dear God, thank you for the reminder that I am not powerless in the face of evil. Your Word promises that I can overcome evil with good, and I choose to stand on that truth today. As I encounter the darkness in this world, especially during the Halloween season, help me respond with the light of your love. Fill my heart with your goodness, and guide my steps as I seek to reflect your character in all that I do. Give me the courage to fill my mind with your Word, to pray for your protection, and to do acts of kindness that glorify you. Let my words be life-giving and my actions be a testimony to your grace. Help me celebrate the light and life that comes from knowing you and share that hope with others. Thank you for always empowering me to overcome evil and do good in this world. Amen.

Noble Dreaming
In “Time for Two States,” Rachel Lu observes that after the shocking events of October 7, “the sequence of events was somewhat predictable. Israel retaliated. It was clear they would win.” Well, maybe not win, exactly. But definitely, “Israel’s war with Hamas is reaching its final stages.” If only it were. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Israelis have made...
The Stories of a Forgotten Nation
In American memory, the communist state of East Germany lingers as a risible Cold War relic, a regimented nation whose greatest accomplishment was the construction of a 96-mile-long wall in Berlin to prevent its beleaguered citizens from escaping to the West. How could anyone live a normal life, let alone thrive, in a state that ruthlessly surveilled its captive population...
A Tale of Two Statues
Should the bronze statue of the Rev. John Witherspoon, put up at Princeton University with great fanfare as recently as 2001, be removed from its prominent position on campus? Yes, according to a petition drafted in May 2022 by five members of the University’s Philosophy department—four graduate students and one professor—and ultimately signed by 285 people, including nine professors (seven...
Mother’s Milk of the Revolution
The signers of the Declaration of Independence pledged their “lives,” their “fortunes,” and their “sacred honor” to advance the revolutionary cause. Their lives have been the subject of innumerable biographies. Their sense of honor has been often explicated in terms of the philosophies of both collective and individual self-governance that they espoused. But much less has been written on how...

What it Means to Have the Eyes of Our Hearts Opened (Ephesians 1:16
What It Means to Have the Eyes of Our Hearts Opened By Jennifer Waddle “…thatthe God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him,having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you…” -...
Misery Loves Company
When I was still in single digits, I read The Murder of Robbie Wayne, Age Six. It appeared in condensed form, in Reader’s Digest, on the magazine racks in my primary school library. I probably shouldn’t have read it, realistically, but I’d become—unexpectedly—an advanced reader. My parents often wrote letters requesting permission for me to read certain books: one, I...
A Plea for Forgiveness
At dark times in American political life, the art of forgiveness has unexpectedly shone through. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of US President Gerald Ford’s unconditional pardon of his predecessor Richard Nixon, who was likely to face criminal charges such as conspiracy and obstruction of justice for his role in the Watergate affair. Many Americans felt betrayed by Nixon...
The American Bible Society Will Close Its $60 Million Museum
American Bible Society announced it will shutter its Faith and Liberty Discovery Center (FLDC), a Bible museum it invested more than $60 million into, after less than three years in operation. ABS had projected that the museum, centrally located on Independence Mall in Philadelphia, would draw 250,000 visitors a year. The revenue from ticket sales for the museum show a...
As France Makes Abortion a Constitutional Right, Evangelicals Seek to Promote Culture of Life
In a rare joint session at the Palace of Versailles on Monday, lawmakers voted 780 to 72 to enshrine abortion access in the constitution, making France the first country in the world to do so. While abortion is already legal in France, the parliament acted in response to the US Supreme Courts overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 as...
