Frankenfish? No, It’s Just a Salmon
Frankenfish? No, It’s Just a Salmon
Nov 14, 2024 7:21 PM

My many mentors over the course of my lifetime thus far have advised me, to a person, to be more optimistic and less cynical. The glass, they told me, always should be perceived as half-full regardless the circumstances. Remembering this advice, I’ll forego reprimanding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its dithering the past 19 years whether genetically engineered salmon should be sold and, if so, labeled. Instead, I celebrate their long-awaited affirmative decision to allow the sale of AquaBounty Technologies GE salmon and refrain from requiring it be labeled. The glass is half-full indeed, and there’s a big ol’ salmon swimming in it.

Try telling that to the worry warts over at Green America, the environmental group surreptitiously affiliated with religious shareholder activists. Just before Thanksgiving, Green America spammed my email inbox with the following missive:

Dear Bruce,

The Food and Drug Administration just made a really bad decision.

The FDA approved the sale of genetically engineered (GE) salmon.

Even worse, the agency has said the GE fish does not need to be labeled, so consumers won’t even know that it’s genetically engineered.

This decision puts our fish stocks, environment, and health at risk and ignores the concerns of millions of American consumers, grocery stores, fishing groups, environmental groups, restaurants, and chefs.

The fight doesn’t stop here. Green America will continue to fight for our right to know when foods have GMOs, and against the creator of GE salmon, AquaBounty.

Do Green America and its affiliates even know what they’re agitating against? It’s quite apparent they don’t, and they should be ashamed of themselves for such a ridiculous exhibition of anti-science hubris while AquaBounty and the FDA collaborate on providing the public with safe and plentiful food. Fortunately, my friends over at the American Council on Health and Science sent me an email with a link to a story by Hank Campbell, the organization’s president, in which he wrote:

The AquAdvantage salmon has been under federal regulatory review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since 1996 and has now gained approval. How is it different from legacy Atlantic salmon? It carries a growth hormone gene from Chinook salmon that speeds growth and improves feed efficiency by up to 100 percent.

It does so by using a ‘promoter’ stretch of DNA from an Ocean Pout which allows the Chinook gene to be expressed. That’s it. And yet adding this one gene to the 40,000 the Atlantic Salmon has led to anti-science groups raising money by calling it “Frankenfish.”

The FDA pleted a legendarily-long scientific review and determined what everyone in science knew – it’s no different than any other fish, it just grows bigger faster thanks to genetic modification. The FDA review showed this fish met all of the criteria for approval; the inserted genes remained stable over generations, it’s no different than any other salmon when es to being eaten by humans or animals, it’s safe for the fish, and faster growth is not just a marketing claim.

Campbell continued:

And it’s good for the public. We all know that more fish in our diets is beneficial but there are limits to what wild fishing can plish. The U.S. currently imports 95% of the Atlantic salmon we consume. A science approach and better farming offer the opportunity for much more domestic aquaculture industry and satisfies dietary health concerns without wondering how many other fish were killed to import salmon.

Want locally grown and sustainable salmon? This is the way to attain it.

This win for science by AquaBounty Technologies on salmon follows on the heels of similar victories for apples and potatoes. We have always been promised that the 21st century would be the Age of Biology when es to agriculture, and we are starting to realize that vision.

Standing in the way are lobbyists and lawyers for the anti-science groups who have been demonizing this for years – they have promised they will use their giant coffers to tie it up in courts, regardless of what data have already shown to be true.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid, Mr. Campbell probably is correct. How any religious group can boast an affiliation with a group such as Green America that is anti-science and works against the best interests of improving the methods of providing nourishment to the world at large is beyond all prehension. More’s the pity.

U.S. Scientists: Maybe Climate Engineering Isn’t Such a Smart Idea
For at least forty years, scientists and policy makers have considered addressing climate related issues by means of climate engineering, or as it monly referred to, geoengineering. A prime example is found in a story published in Newsweek that proposed (albeit with reservations) to use geoengineering to fix a climatic “problem”: Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action pensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more...
Send a Valentine to Gaia: Expropriate Oil Companies and their Profits
Forget the candy hearts, chocolate, the local Cineplex and bistro this weekend. St. Valentine’s Day somehow has been hijacked by Global Disinvestment Day, which means you should protest fossil fuels and encourage shareholders to submit proxy resolutions to leave oil, coal and gas resources untapped. Your significant others are guaranteed to love it because … Gaia. Behind this movement are nominally religious shareholder activists such as As You Sow, as well as the World Council of Churches, filmdom’s The Hulk...
Radio Free Acton: Elise Graveline Hilton on Human Trafficking
This week on Radio Free Acton, I spoke with my colleague Elise Graveline Hilton about her new monographA Vulnerable World: The High Price of Human Trafficking. Human trafficking is not a pleasant subject to discuss; it can be hard to believethat in our modern world, people are still enslaved and exploited sexually or for their labor, treated as nothing more modities to be used in the pursuit of illegal profit. And yet the practice is widespread and growing, even in...

How Christianity Gave Us the Modern World
“Christianity undergirded the development of Western liberalism (in the old, good sense of the word),” says Rich Lowry. In fact, without Christianity there would probably not be anything like what we conceive as true liberty: The indispensable role of Christianity in the creation of individual rights and ultimately of secularism itself is the subject of the revelatory new intellectual historyInventing the Individual by Larry Siedentop. Here’s hoping that President Obama gives it a quick skim before he next takes the...
Mike Rowe on the minimum wage: There’s no such thing as a ‘bad job’
In the latest additiontoMike Rowe’s growing catalogof pointed Facebook responses, the former Dirty Jobs host tackles a question on the minimum wage, answering a man named “Darrell Paul,” who asks: The federal minimum wage is $7.25 and hour. A lot of people think it should be raised to $10.10. Seattle now pays $15 an hour, and the The Freedom Socialist Party is demanding a $20 living wage for every working person. What do you think about the minimum wage? How...
Worldwide Freedom Is Under Threat
Global Democracy and freedom are under attack. Freedom House, a nonprofit organization which monitors freedom and advocates for democracy and human rights just released the 2015 “Freedom in the World” report. The results are not good. In his introduction, Arch Puddington, vice president for research says that “the condition of global political rights and civil liberties, showed an overall decline. Indeed, acceptance of democracy as the world’s dominant form of government—and of an international system built on democratic ideals—is under...
Dietrich Bonhoeffer on the economy of love
On August 12, 1943, months after having been arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned, the Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote to his young fiancée Maria von Wedemeyer: When I consider the state of the world, the total obscurity enshrouding our personal destiny, and my present imprisonment, our union—if it wasn’t frivolity, which it certainly wasn’t—can only be a token of God’s grace and goodness, which summon us to believe in him. We would have to be blind not...
Fossil Fuel Divestment: Economically Reckless and Morally Callous
“Who cares about the suffering and premature death of millions in the developing world?” asks Bruce Edward Walker in this week’s Acton Commentary.”Not religious activists agitating for fossil fuel divestment.” In another trendy move, environmentalist shareholder activists are pressuring panies in which they invest to scale back in part pletely their interests in oil, gas and coal. For example, Danielle Fugere, president and chief counsel at the As You Sow religious shareholder activist outfit, told The Guardian last month that...
A Price is Signal Wrapped in an Incentive to be Coordinated by God
When Christians think of the majesty of God’s handiwork we tend to think of the visible aspects of nature. We agree with King David that, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1). But there are intricate and beautiful aspects of God’s creative geniusthat we don’t often think about—or don’t think about as being created by God. Take, for instance, the price system. As economist Alex Tabarrok says in the video...
