Double-edged sword: The power of the Word - Psalm 53:2-4
Double-edged sword: The power of the Word - Psalm 53:2-4
Jun 15, 2026 6:40 AM

God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. Everyone has turned away, all have e corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on God.

Sometimes it seems evil is more powerful than God. Especially when we see and hear of brutal and devastating beheadings of Christians in the Middle East. The rise of Islamic State group and their ghastly, violent acts is particularly disturbing. If we look at the world, or even our own sphere of influence, it may appear that the wicked prosper, and the Lord has little control over the events of the day.

The problem of evil and suffering is one of the chief reasons people abandon their faith and belief in God. The psalmist in Psalm 53 echoes Psalm 14, reminding humanity of its deep sinfulness and shame. The Lord specifically calls out those who persecute and harm His people. The author even mentions in the text that those who devour the Lord’s people are lost and vile; they consume them as “though eating bread.” They possess no thought or pause for their destruction of human life and heinous acts. With the brutal beheadings of Coptic Christians in Libya this year, Bishop Angaelos, head of the Coptic Church in the United Kingdom, prayed the evildoers “that the value of God’s creation and human life may e more evident to them.” Those who have no fear of the Lord have prehension of the severity of their ways.

The larger point in this passage is that without grace, we are left to our own sinful devices and destruction. Verse 6 declares a prophetic word, “Oh, that salvation for Israel e out of Zion!” The Gospel firmly stands as the good news and answer to evil. We fully learn that the innocent do indeed suffer, but that God has entered into human flesh to take on suffering and deliver us from a meaningless suffering and death.

Everywhere today it seems most people do whatever they want without much of a belief in a higher purpose. But God will exact justice and send judgment for those who wrong His people or continue in unrepentant rebellion. The answer to the plague of sin and evil is, of course, Christ. He is offered to humankind freely, and His birth, life, death, and resurrection, enable us to transcend this world and unite with total love and goodness. The cross of Christ reminds us just how much God enters into suffering for us and how low he is willing to go to reach us. We can cling to its hope and promises and flee from ing wrath for those mired in the ways of the world.

A French Economist in the Pampas
The country was broke when Javier Milei took office in December 2023 as President of Argentina. He came to office with the support of more than 56 percent of voters, offering a libertarian vision of economic policy embodied in the promise of dollarizing the economy, something the majority of voters understood and appreciated. Dollarization, however, was not the path taken...
What Is Reformation Day and How Can Christians Remember It?
What Is Reformation Day and How Can Christians Remember It? By Lynette Kittle Bible Reading “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” - Ephesians 2:8 Some may wonder what Reformation Day is all about and why it is considered such a big deal in Church...
A Prayer for Comfort When Grief Feels Overwhelming
A Prayer for Comfort When Grief Feels Overwhelming By Rachel Wojo Bible Reading Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. -...
Mystery Is to Be Sought Out
Weekly Overview: One of the most scandalous truths of the gospel is that our Creator longs to be encountered by his creation. God longs to meet with us. His greatest desire is for relationship with us. I can’t fathom why God in all his holiness and goodness makes himself available to us, but it is the powerful truth of Scripture....
As Long As It Is Day
Weekend, November 2, 2024 As Long As It Is Day “As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9:4 NIV) The daylight savings time change happens this time of year, when we’re reminded to “fall back” an hour. The idea is that we...
A Higher
The past five years have been tumultuous ones for elite higher education. Campuses have been rocked by plagiarism scandals, ugly and violent protests, and revelations about admissions discrimination that went on under the guise of affirmative action. Meanwhile, reformers are trying out new approaches, from civics institutes to more robust legislative oversight of public universities to brand-new private institutions. How...
Frank Capra’s Halloween Classic
Halloween has gradually become an occasion for horror movies, even as it has emerged as part of a new kind of autumn-worship very well catered to by every aspect of our commercial society. It may, in a secularizing America, even be making a run at Christmas’s place as the national holiday. Both of these tendencies somehow come from our rejection...
Our Embedded Liberalism
Scott Nelson’s review of The Roots of Liberalism might leave one to wonder whether smart people should bother to read my book. “The overly analytical reader … will search in vain for evidence of liberalism’s older intellectual tradition.” Again, I prefer “stories, anecdotes, and literature to a rigidly intellectual analysis.” What Nelson omits to mention is that I devote one...

The Jury Trial Right in Discrimination Cases
For over a decade, one of the hottest fronts in the culture war has been the most unnecessary. So-called “wedding vendor cases” now include not only conscientious florists and photographers but also nuns operating parochial schools, churches running colleges, and charitable ventures facilitating adoption. The scenario always plays out the same. The service provider happily serves all people, regardless of...
