Take Up Your Cross Bible Verses

What did Jesus mean by you should "Take Up Your Cross" and follow Him? We find this Bible phrase within the books of the gospel as a teaching of Jesus. "Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:23-27) We can better understand this phrase with Matthew Henry's Bible Commentary, which says, "We often meet with crosses in the way of duty; and though we must not pull them upon our own heads, yet, when they are laid for us, we must take them up, and carry them after Christ. It is well or ill with us, according to as it is well or ill with our souls. The body cannot be happy if the soul is miserable in the other world; but the soul may be happy, though the body is greatly afflicted and oppressed in this world. We must never be ashamed of Christ and his gospel." Discover the other Bible verses related to "take up your cross" in this collection os scripture quotes: Photo credit:Getty Images/Mbolina
