How Is the Bible Relevant Today?
The Bible's Relevance Today
Chris Braun, transcribed from the video above, discusses how the Bible is relevant today:Paul told Titus, "You must teach what accords with sound doctrine." He didn't just say what teach sound doctrine, he said teach what accords with it, or what fits with it. In other words, the Bible comes powerfully into intersection with life, and in studying it we can see everything that we need. Peter said, "For life and godliness." Maybe the most famous passage about this is where Paul says to Timothy, "All scripture is God breathe, and it is useful. For teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training, and righteousness." Everything we need to know and follow Christ we find in the pages of scripture.
A few years ago my wife and I had over some young medical students that have started attending our church, and one of them, her parents were actually from a communist bag, and she had never been around Christianity at all, hadn't heard anything about it. So she was asking me why we decide to preach the way we do. And I just started talking to her about the Bible and the Word of God, and how relevant it is for life. And I said, "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul." When people feel like they're dead inside, that they've come to the end of themselves, that scripture is a light that we can look to as though we're in a dark place.
The law of the Lord is perfect, making wise the simple. You know, life comes down to decisions about parenting, about how we use the resources that God has entrusted to us about the career that we pursue, and scripture makes wise the simple. It's more precious than gold, much pure gold, it's sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb, Psalm 19 says. And the reason for that is because it's through the scripture, and through the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit that we have everything we need for life and godliness.
