Vale of Mambre

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A plateau in Hebron, in Chanaan. When Abraham was dismissed from Egypt by the Pharao, he went with his nephew Lot towards Bethel, where they separated, and Abraham "came and dwelt by the vale of Mambre, which is in Hebron, and he built there an altar to the Lord" (Genesis 13). There dwelt his posterity, and there he was buried, in the cave of Machpelah, with Sara, Jacob, Rebecca and Lia.
